What to expect at Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is a protected landscape of lakes, bird habitat, and plant life. Established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, it was the emirate’s first area protected by law, according to the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD).

The reserve was designated a Ramsar site on 25 April 2013 and joined the IUCN Green List in 2018, the first site in the region to receive that recognition, EAD says. A former coastal salt flat, or sabkha, the area now includes natural and man-made lakes that support wildlife.

EAD reports more than 250 bird species and 37 plant species, as well as aquatic life. During autumn and spring, as many as 4,000 Greater Flamingos live at the reserve. That seasonal gathering makes Al Wathba flamingos a highlight of the wetland’s birdlife.

How do you get to Al Wathba from Abu Dhabi?

How do you get to Al Wathba from Abu Dhabi?

From Abu Dhabi city centre, the drive to the reserve takes about 30 minutes. Follow E22, connect with E30 Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Truck Road, and then follow signs for the reserve.

If you’re arranging your arrival in the city, getting from Abu Dhabi International Airport to Emirates Plaza Hotel is a separate part of the journey. For the reserve drive, allow time to follow the road signs after joining E30.

The reserve drive starts outside central Abu Dhabi, so you may want to plan any city stops separately.

If you’re planning other city stops around the outing, the central Abu Dhabi neighbourhood guide can help put the city-centre starting point in context.

Trails, wildlife and viewing areas

Trails, wildlife and viewing areas

The reserve has two self-guided walking trails, measuring 1.5 km and 3 km, and a bird-watching hide. You can choose a trail length to suit the time you have, then use the hide for birdwatching.

EAD describes an air-conditioned visitor centre and shaded areas along the trails. Its visitor information does not specify trail-surface accessibility or accessible facilities, so check directly with EAD if you need those details before setting out.
